Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of Asian Bodywork originating in Japan over one hundred years ago but it's foundation is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which is thousands of years old.  The word Shiatsu is Japanese and means "finger pressure".  Shiatsu moves Qi and Blood through the energetic pathways using many different techniques such as soothing, kneading, stretching, tapping and most important, pressing.  I believe that pressing on the body is the most effective technique to remove blockages, regulate the nervous system and vital organs and stimulate the vital Acupuncture points.

Shiatsu is a "clothing on" therapy performed on a wide, low table.  It is recommended that clients wear loose, lightweight clothing for their session.  A short-sleeved t-shirt and soft, stretchy pants are best.

What does Shiatsu feel like?

Shiatsu feels wonderful.  The Shiatsu therapist applies techniques using her fingers, thumbs, palms and elbows in a continuous

rhythmic sequence.  The pressure feels more localized because unlike other types of bodywork, the thumbs and finger pads are used to apply pressure for most of the treatment instead of the entire palm.

Certain areas and points on the body may feel tender.  Your therapist will adjust the pressure used to minimize discomfort and achieve lasting results.  The goal is to find the painful blocked areas of the body and move the energy so healing can take place.

What will my appointment include?

Your appointment will start with filling out a health assessment form.  Together we'll discuss your health concerns, areas of pain or injury, lifestyle habits and physical goals.  My assessment according to TCM principles will guide how the session progresses.

Intake usually takes about 15 minutes and then we will do a complete hour of bodywork.
